Does Chiropractic Care Benefit Lung Disease Treatment?

People who suffer from chronic lung conditions understand the struggle of finding the best treatment for their needs. The number of treatment options can be overwhelming, and finding the right one for your condition and lifestyle can take time. While many people stick with traditional treatments, such as pulmonary rehabilitation, medications, and at times, a lung transplant, some people benefit from combining alternative treatments with their traditional methods.
Alternative methods of treatment for chronic lung conditions include cellular therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. Take a moment to read through the benefits of adding chiropractic therapy to your treatment regimen for lung disease.

Understanding Chiropractic Treatment

According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic treatment focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.
Chiropractic treatment is often a natural approach to treating conditions in the body. Doctors of chiropractic care rarely recommend medicine and often treat conditions through manual manipulation. They also incorporate other natural therapies such as hot/cold alternating compresses, relaxation techniques, rehabilitative and general exercise, and counseling about lifestyle, diet and dietary supplements.

Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Lung Diseases?

Chiropractic care is often used to help patients who suffer from spine conditions, typically because treatment focuses on the neck and back. Many studies are still determining whether chiropractic treatment is an effective method to reduce the symptoms of certain chronic lung conditions.
The official COPD website recently released a study of 15 patients who have moderate COPD to test the effectiveness of chiropractic care for lung conditions. In this study, five patients received soft tissue therapy, five received soft tissue therapy plus spinal manipulation and the remaining five received soft tissue therapy, manipulation and exercise. The study measured lung function before treatment and four weeks after treatment. The study showed that patients who received chiropractic treatment has less gasping breaths than those who did not receive it. Patients who received all three treatment methods had the best results overall.
