Russell Winwood here again. If you haven’t heard of me, I’m the man people call the COPD athlete. I live with COPD on a daily basis just like many of you do, and one thing I know is that eating in a way that helps you manage your COPD isn’t always easy. One time it’s especially difficult to eat positively for your COPD is when you go out to eat at a restaurant.
Two tips for choosing better food for your COPD when you eat out
Now that the holiday season is behind us, many of us are tired out from all of the holiday cooking we’ve been doing, and that means we may be inclined to go out to eat more. However, restaurants aren’t always the easiest place to find food choices that are good for your COPD. Luckily, there are two tips you can use to help you choose better foods for your COPD when you go out to eat.
My first tip for you is choose the restaurants you go to wisely. The food that you get at a restaurant is usually determined by what type of restaurant you pick. When you have COPD, you should be especially careful of your food choices, which means you also need to be more selective about the restaurant you choose. For instance, you’re more likely to have better food choices for your COPD at a restaurant that serves fresh, organic foods than at someplace like a fast food restaurant. Therefore, I recommend that you do a little online research before you go out and find a place that has lots of organic and fresh food options on its menu.
My second tip is to pick the freshest food option on the menu. Even if you don’t pick an organic food restaurant in the first place, there’s likely to be some foods on the restaurant’s menu that’ll be better for your COPD. Just look for options that are organic or fresh. For example, you should look at options like salads or fish with fresh vegetables rather than greasy fried foods. You can ask if your food can be prepared without caloric extras like sauce, or ask to have the sauce served on the side.Mostly, choose the freshest, healthiest options available to you, wherever you are.
