Living With Pulmonary Fibrosis: The Story of Allen R.

by | Jul 2, 2019 | Blog, Featured, Patient Stories, Pulmonary Fibrosis

On September 28, 2015, Allen was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) after a biopsy by his pulmonologist. This condition causes thickening and scarring of the lung tissue, and there’s no known cause for Allen’s condition. Before he found Lung Health Institute, Allen had to live with many difficulties as a result of his chronic lung disease.

Allen’s Life Before Lung Health Institute

After being diagnosed with IPF, Allen’s quality of life gradually declined. He had to use a walker to get around. The walker was even necessary to go from his recliner to the bathroom 20 feet away. Even with the walker, walking long distances was difficult. In fact, Allen said, “I walked 10 feet, and I was completely dizzy and ready to fall down.”
The La Pine, Oregon, resident also had to get an oxygen concentrator so that his oxygen levels wouldn’t get too low. The oxygen concentrator wasn’t enough, though. In fact, at one point his doctor told him he likely had about 30 days left to live.

How Allen Found Lung Health Institute

After this startling news, Allen began looking for information about his condition and treatment options for it. He found information about Lung Health Institute online, and he scheduled a Lung Restoration Treatment in the middle of October 2015. Almost 4 years later, Allen is still coming in for regular treatments.

How Lung Health Institute Helped Allen

Allen still relies on his oxygen concentrator, but his quality of life has improved. He can now walk without his walker, and he’s also been able to take a number of trips with his friends and family. For example, he and some of his friends went on a cruise to Alaska.
Also, he enjoys taking trips to the Oregon coast to watch whales. In the winter, he visits Yuma, Arizona, and loves to attend nighttime parties in the desert during the full moon, which are known as howling at the moon parties.
Allen has also developed a great relationship with the Lung Health Institute health care team at the clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. “They’re working hard, and they do great. They make you feel so welcome,” he says. Allen’s advice to people considering treatment at Lung Health Institute is, “Do it.”

Find Treatment for Chronic Lung Diseases at Lung Health Institute

At our 5 Lung Health Institute locations, our health care team is committed to helping patients find supplementary treatments for their chronic lung diseases
For instance, we offer 3 Anti-Inflammatory Initiative, or AI2™, plans. These plans are designed to provide several benefits. For one thing, they’re intended to help boost your immune system naturally. They may also help train your body to use fats as inflammation-fighting fuel.
Our team also offers a minimally invasive treatment option called cellular therapy. This is a procedure that uses concentrated platelets and cells from your body to target lung disease. These platelets release healing properties that, when combined with growth factors, proteins and other helpful cells, may help to promote healing in damaged tissue and reduce inflammation in your lungs.
