Medical Tourism in Tampa
Tampa, Florida has become a hub for medical tourism due to its scenic location, vibrant medical community and cultural influences. Traveling for treatment to the Lung Health Institute doesn’t have to be all business. The deep culture and history of the Tampa Bay area provides any visitor with the opportunity for a fun-filled visit.
Take in the History of Tampa
The brick streets of downtown Tampa lead in many historic directions. Viewable from the Lung Health Institute clinic are the gleaming minarets of the Henry B. Plant Hall, part of the University of Tampa. The university is the latest occupant of the storied Tampa Bay Hotel that was built as the most luxurious hotel in Florida in the late 19th century by railroad tycoon, Henry B. Plant. Today, the building houses the Henry B. Plant Museum which highlights the hotel as the launching point for Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. If you choose to head a couple miles east, you’ll arrive in the Ybor City District where you can find eclectic shops and sights at Centro Ybor, where the immigrant population of Tampa built a booming commercial and cultural community.
Not only can you take in the ambiance of a historical Florida town through a show at the atmospherically-designed movie palace, the Tampa Theatre, but you can also catch a Broadway-style musical or theatrical performance at the Straz Performing Arts Center. The city even has an option to view its attractions by the Tampa Electric Company Streetcar, which will take you to the Florida Aquarium and Tampa Cruise Port found in the Channelside District of the city.
The Beach at your Doorstep
There are dozens of the best gulf beaches in the country a few miles from Downtown Tampa. St. Pete Beach features the elegant Don Cesar Resort, among other beach hotspots. The World War II era Fort Desoto, is also a treasure on the waterfront. The historic fort has cannon installations and cavernous ammunition storage facilities that you can tour at your leisure.
Much More Food than Just a Great Cuban Sandwich
Tampa is overwhelmingly known for its great Cuban food, however there are well over 100 restaurants in Tampa, many of which offer award-winning fare; everything from fine Italian to Japanese, and of course, some of the best Caribbean-American fusion food you’ll ever try. If you make it over to Ybor City, you can eat at Florida’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia. Here you will find a restaurant named a “Top 50 All-American icon” by Nation’s Restaurant News magazine. You can even eat the very same cut of steak that Babe Ruth did when he visited Tampa while on spring training for the Yankees. Check out Tampa’s directory of fine dining.
