Three lung-healthy resolutions for the new year

My name’s Russell Winwood, and like many of you, I live with COPD on a daily basis. One thing that I’m passionate about is helping other COPD patients find ways to manage their symptoms better and improve their quality of life. With the coming of the new year, I’d like to take this opportunity to offer you some advice that may help you achieve these goals.

Three New Year’s resolutions that may help improve your lung health this year

There are many things that I’ve learned about COPD and how I can better manage my own symptoms. Even though every person experiences COPD differently, there are several things I know that may help you. For instance, there are three specific resolutions you can make for this year that may help you if you have COPD.
The first resolution I recommend to my fellow COPD patients is get more sleep. This may sound odd, but rest is very important for people with our chronic lung disease. This is because your body does most of its healing while you’re asleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you’re depriving your body of its best chance to work on healing your lung tissues. It may help to try things like going to bed a little earlier and taking short naps during the day, but you should try to get as much sleep and healing as you can.
Another resolution that you should consider if you have COPD is to eat better. You may not realize it, but your diet may play a vital role in better managing your COPD symptoms. For instance, I use a ketogenic diet personally, and it’s helped me both improve my pulmonary function test results and my blood work has shown a steady decrease in inflammation markers. Finding a diet that may help you get such results, too, is something you should consider this year.
A third resolution I recommend for COPD patients is to get more exercise. Since my COPD diagnosis, I’ve run marathons and even finished the IRONMAN competition. However, you don’t have to exercise at this high of a level to benefit your COPD. Even doing simple cardio and bodyweight exercises every day may help you feel less breathless and improve your energy levels.
Whether you take my advice on your New Year’s resolutions or not, there’s one thing that I hope every COPD patient finds this year. I hope you all find ways to manage your symptoms more effectively and discover ways to improve your quality of life.
