The 2 most vital parts of the human body are the lungs and heart. Perhaps that is why they are joined together; the harder the lungs work, the harder the heart works. Because of this, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other chronic lung diseases should be aware of possible side effects from heart medications that could impact the lungs.
Not all side effects are negative, however. For example, research shows that statins, which are a group of medications designed to lower cholesterol and promote heart health, may actually provide a beneficial side effect to patients who have COPD.
Can Statins Actually Help COPD Patients?
Believe it or not, statins may actually provide some benefits to patients who have been diagnosed with COPD. These medications are commonly recommended by doctors to help lower the level of bad cholesterol in patients. They are often accompanied by a diet and exercise program designed to improve overall heart health.
Because there is a close correlation between the lungs and heart in the human body, researchers at the University of Auckland in Australia decided to test the side effects of statins on the lungs, specifically within COPD patients. What they found is astonishing.
Statins May Help Reduce the Incidence of Death by 30% in COPD Patients
Researchers couldn’t believe it. In fact, a group of researchers in Taiwan was so shocked by the findings of the study from the University of Auckland that they decided to conduct a research study of their own. Using a test group of 14,000 patients diagnosed with COPD and admitted to the hospital for a COPD flare-up, the Taiwanese research group came to the same conclusion as the prior study — statins helped reduce the risk of a COPD flare-up by 30% in the patients within their study.
Due to the anti-inflammatory properties found in statins, this type of medication may help reduce inflammation-triggered COPD episodes, in addition to helping to lower cholesterol in the body.
